High-Precision Baseband Timing at Parkes

چکیده
We present recent observations of three pulsars, PSR J1909-3744, PSR J1600-3053, and PSR J1022+1001, that demonstrate remarkable levels of timing precision and instrumental stability. Data were taken with CPSR2, a new baseband recording system at the Parkes radio telescope, during the first 12 months of operation.

High-Precision Timing and Polarimetry of PSR J0437−4715
This thesis reports on the recent results of a continuing, high-precision pulsar timing project, currently focused on the nearby, binary millisecond pulsar, PSR J0437−4715. Pulse arrival time analysis has yielded a remarkable series of constraints on the physical parameters of this system and evidence for the distortion of space-time as predicted by the General Theory of Relativity. Owing to th...
متن کاملRequired cadence for the 10/50cm dual band receiver for pulsar observations
ATUC has requested: “ATNF staff to analyse and present quantitative information on appropriate science-driven receiver cadence for Parkes.”. This document provides input into the response by describing the science-case for the use of the 10-50CM receiver at Parkes for the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) observations. This document concentrates on the PPTA and makes use of analyses carried out...
متن کاملRadio Astronomical Polarimetry and Phase-coherent Matrix Convolution
A new phase-coherent technique for the calibration of polarimetric data is presented. Similar to the one-dimensional form of convolution, data are multiplied by the response function in the frequency domain. Therefore, the system response may be corrected with arbitrarily high spectral resolution, effectively treating the problem of bandwidth depolarization. As well, the original temporal resol...

Given sufficient sensitivity, pulsar timing observations can make a direct detection of gravitational waves passing over the Earth. Pulsar timing is most sensitive to gravitational waves with frequencies in the nanoHertz region, with the most likely astronomical sources being binary super-massive black holes in galaxy cores. The Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project uses the Parkes 64-m radio tele...
متن کاملA Baseband Recorder for Radio Pulsar Observations
Digital signal recorders are becoming widely used in several subfields of centimetre-wavelength radio astronomy. We review the benefits and design considerations of such systems and describe the Princeton Mark IV instrument, an implementation designed for coherent-dedispersion pulsar observations. Features of this instrument include corrections for the distortions caused by coarse quantization ...
